The Obstruction in the Hallway
Less than five seconds later, Randolph skidded to a stop outside the bathroom. George crashed head first into the reindeerâs neck. His father went nose first into his shoulder blade, both of them groaning from the sudden impact.
âThis bloody thing should really have seat belts,â said Georgeâs father as he righted himself.
Hugo gingerly pressed his fingers against his nose to make sure it wasnât broken.
âWeeeee-oooooo weeeee-oooooo weeeee-oooooo.â Tricksie, meanwhile, was doing her best impression of a siren. âObstruction in the road! I repeat: OBSTRUCTION IN THE ROAD!â
She took her hat off, rummaged inside for a yellow hazard vest, then promptly shrugged it on. âNobody move,â she said, fastening the Velcro straps over her onesie. âThis could be a gremlin for all we know.â
George ducked his head round Randolphâs antlers to find his nan standing in the middle of the hallway. Her hair was puffed up in rollers, and she was wearing her frilly pink nightgown. âWell, well, well,â she said, a cup of tea clutched to her chest. âWhatâs all this, then?â
âAre you all right, Mum?â called Georgeâs father in a high-pitched voice. âI can explain everything. Please, just try not to panic!â
âIâm not panicking, Hugo,â said Nana Flo calmly.
âThen call the police! These creatures have kidnapped us against our will!â
âActually, Iâm very willing,â said George.
Nana Floâs eyes twinkled. âI can see why. It all looks like such fun.â
Tricksie glanced at George over her shoulder. âI like this lady very much.â
âNan loves adventures,â said George, remembering their conversation from yesterday evening. âCan we bring her with us?â
âGreat idea.â Tricksie turned back to Nana Flo and drew herself up to her full height, which was 12 ¼ inches (in shoes). âFlower-headed lady,â she announced, in what George assumed was her most formal voice, âwe are about to embark on an adventure of positively Christmas proportions. Would you like to join us?â
âWhere are you going?â said Nana Flo.
âItâs a secret,â said Tricksie.
âAll right, youâve convinced me.â Nana Flo set her cup of tea down by the skirting board, and then pottered into her bedroom. âI wonât be a moment,â she called over her shoulder, and Tricksie, despite her earlier urgency, sat cross-legged on Randolphâs head and waited for her.
âI thought we were in a rush,â said Georgeâs father pointedly.
Tricksie shrugged. âSome adventurers are worth waiting for.â
âAnd some are worth kidnapping against their will, I suppose,â he said sourly.
Tricksie nodded. âPrecisely.â
âHow can you tell the difference?â asked George.
âI am very wisdomous,â said the elf solemnly.
When Nana Flo emerged from her bedroom, her holly-branch hairclip was nestled snugly between two hair rollers. âSplendid,â said Tricksie approvingly. âYouâve dressed for the occasion.â
Nana Flo flung her hands out. âDonât just sit there gawping at me, boys. Help me up.â
With the help of Randolph, and the explicit refusal of his father, George managed to haul Nana Flo up on to the reindeerâs back, where he helped her settle in the space directly behind him.
âLady and gentleman and disgruntled Scrooge, prepare for take-off!â said Tricksie, stepping up to the antlers.
